THE MEDIA'S HATE-SPEECHBy Charlie SykesHate speech? Patrick McIlheran suggests the MSM look in the mirror. Here’s what bothers me most about the way Rush Limbaugh has had to bow out of his latest, costliest hobby, that of buying part of an NFL team: It’s the excuse that Limbaugh was too “divisive.” The group bidding for the St. Louis Rams said it was dropping Limbaugh because the talk show host “complicated” the deal. You can say that: From the least sports-page hack commentator to national political neoplasms such as Jesse Jackson, a segment of America went into hysterics at the thought that the left wing’s chief hate object of the past 20 years would buy a sports team....
The mind-set seems to be this: That if someone says conservative things, he is bad. If he says them long enough or to a large enough audience, he is so bad it’s OK to fantasize about blowing him up or to make up false evidence of racism and to repeat it without even cursory journalistic safeguards. I’m not worried about Limbaugh – he’s a grown-up and can take it. I catch a little of it myself, via hate e-mails and inchoate rage from lefty commentators on my blog, but it pretty much rolls off. It’s just trash-talk. What I am worried about is people who don’t comment for a living: Some schmoe who writes an essay for the paper and gets gobsmacked by left-wing vein-poppers calling him names, for instance. That’ll put you off the idea of civic engagement. People who at long last got involved in politics this summer, via tea parties, only to be called racists by no less than Jimmy Carter – what did they do to deserve the utterly baseless hurling of the most potent accusation now available in American society? What’s happening, from Chris Matthews’ lies to Jimmy Carter’s, is simply the left trying to delegitimize conservatives wherever possible. Everything we say will be branded racist, somehow, and just holding the beliefs we do will be “divisive.” Divisive screws up your life. It separates you from polite society, which is the point: The left is eager for conservatism to be socially unacceptable. Unable to debate, it slanders. Unable to persuade, it tries to bring back shunning. And they dare call themselves "progressive." |

I understand you and anonymous bear quite an antipathy toward community organizers . . . an antipathy I don't share. In fact, I think many of them do a lot of good for thier communities and our country. What I don't understand is how that antipathy justifies calling someone you disagree with a pimp. What this site needs is a little less name-calling and a little more trying to understand the other person's point of view.

Real sharp. Attack personnaly the folks you disagree with. Walt, I have 17 years of service, active and reserve, and had one tour in VN with the 101st Airborne. Not your two tours, but at least 11 months and 23 days. My complaint with Cheney was his comment that he didn't serve because "he had better things to do." A lot of the guys in my unit "had better things to do" too, but they served.

My, my, my. My comment about Rush being tossed under the bus by his business partners seems to have struck a nerve. Rather than respond, I've been called naive, an idiot, and, despite my having run a business, someone is surprised that I favor free enterprise. Methinks Rush is not the only right-winger dealing in in stereotypes. And one of the respondents believes that Rush's business partners, beacause they off-loaded him to the pavement, must be liberals. This is all quite amusing.

You need to pay more attention to other news outlets and try to understand the guilty white liberal mindset. Rush Limbaugh’s guilty white liberal “business partners” were intimidated by the MSM. When people invest their money they don’t want to invest in a controversial enterprise, THEREFORE, the liberal media and liberal politicians (who realize this) make life miserable for the “free enterprises system”. I’ve been listening to Rush since 1987, while still on active duty; what I’ve noticed is that even back at his beginning he had a very deep admiration for the military and a love for football. Well let me tell you this, as a member of the military who served in a war that liberals hated (and those who fought it) Rush was the ONLY media personality who respected my service. I have yet to find a liberal as dedicated to America’s service members as Rush is. That’s all I need to know.

I think Patrick has the right idea here. Forget boycotting the NFL and all that stuff. The goal should be to get Keith Olberman tossed from his Sunday night NFL gig. Someone needs to put together a good piece on Olberman with his 3 worst quotes and get it out there in the blogosphere. The NFL needs to be consistent.

What most of the conservatives here seem to ignore is that Rush was thrown off (or under) the bus by his business partners, not by the dreaded liberals. That, I might remind the conservatives, is how the free enterprise system works: wedo business with whom we want, and don't do business with those we do not want to.
