KLEEFISCH: CENSORING SENSENBRENNER

By Charlie Sykes

So if you're a member of Congress and you want to send out more than 499 pieces of mail, you have to go through this newsletter vetting process at the franking commission-- the body that approves all official mail. The problem is, some GOP congresspeople seem to be going through this process again and again trying to explain to constituents what's on their minds, but still pass inspection with the Democrat-run proof-reading police. It's proven to be a long, annoying road for congresspeople like Wisconsin's Jim Sensenbrenner, whose newsletter is in its third draft and counting. Why can't they just say what they want like the 1st ammendment is supposed to allow them to? The commission says the newletters sound too political. Okay. You go ahead and enjoy that cap and tax, then...

Snowbird, I agree that it is censorship. But I believe that individual school districts have the right to decide whether or not they show "the messiah's" speech. Even the POTUS does not have THE RIGHT to be heard. He can scream at the top of lungs for all I care; doesn't mean that I have to listen to him.

Oh BTW, Fred and Sheesh, are you in favor of the Fairness Doctrine, Campaign Finance reform? If you are, then you have no understanding of the First Amendment.

Sheeesh hit the nail on the head . . . most of the posters here have no understanding of free speech or the first amendment. F. Jimmy can say or write anything he wants . . . but not on the government tab. Franked mail is paid for completely by tax dollars. My guess is that every one of the whiners who are crying about Sensenbrenner's supposed "rights" also complain about government spending. In their minds, all government spending is bad . . . except for GOP propaganda.

Why should we the taxpayers fund ANY congress critters newsletters? One and all they should be considered campaign pieces, and funded by the campaign committees, not taxpayers.

Sheeesh... If the newsletters were passed or rejected for the same reasons, regardless of the Congress member's political party I would agree that so called "propaganda" shouldn't be mailed at tax payer expense. But of course the Dems controlling the franking commission reject Republicans for certain terminalogy but will allow Democrats to mail their newsletters with some of the exact same terms. So Dems can mail their propaganda at tax payer expense but not Republicans? Hmmm....

It's pretty clear that most of the people posting on this issue (and probably Kleefisch) don't know what "the frank" is all abut, haven't read the "Red Book", and are clueless on the concept of "free speech". This has NOTHING to do with "free speech", it has to do with what can be mailed on the tax-payer's dime. That's MY dime. That's YOUR dime. Sensenbrenner can mail whatever political propaganda that he wants, he just can't ask the taxpayer to foot the bill for his postage!

Its called a "franking privilege", because its a PRIVILEGE provided to members of Congress to contact their constituents. Every year he sends out his survey with questions like; "Pres Bush is in favor protecting children, however the D's want to eat every third child, are you in favor of eating every third child." My correspondence with Mr. Sen. usually includes his response as I know better than you possible could. He has never worked at a nongovernmental job in his life.

Does this mean that the Dems are prohibited from using terms like "extreme right," "extreme right wing," "the far right," "Big {insert vilified industry here}" and the like?

I guess I was sugar coating it a bit. You are absolutely right, Maddog. These actions and blatant restrictions of free speech need to be called out for exactly what they are. ...and Dems say the Republicans are the ones ignoring the Constitution.

Also Locke, that would mean that only Republicans would have to use their own money to send the newsletters. Meanwhile, Democrats (and those that pass the Dems controlled franking commission) could still send theirs for free. Pretty spooky how Democrats are trying to control speech they don't like.

Well, for one thing he cannot use campaign funds. Secondly, the Congressman has the obligation to keep his district informed and Sensenbrenner is one of the best at doing so. Third, his descriptions are all accurate.

While I don't have a problem with bringing the issue to light, I do have to wonder...if it's so important to him to inform his constituents, why doesn't he just pay for it with campaign funds?

WOW- these posts over the last few days directly point to the fact that we ARE losing our first amendment rights. There is a revolution in the making and the left are the ones pushing it to the boiling point.

This is too shocking to even comment on. I am shocked, stunned, and angry! How on earth can this system be in place. Why and the heck does ANY Congressman/woman stand for it! These are CONGRESS members, surrounded by political staff and minds, right? I'm angry at them, but not as much as simply learning of the fact that this system even exists here, right here, in Wisconsin, USA. Is there any hope of our children still being able to recognize the country of their grandparents?
