HE JOKED ABOUT IT? (AUDIO ADDED)

By Charlie Sykes

Backward reels the mind. One of Teddy's journalistic buddies tells public radio a heart-warming tale of Kennedy's wit and humor, including the fact that TK liked to hear the latest Chappaquidick jokes.

I don’t know if you know this or not, but one of his favorite topics of humor was indeed Chappaquiddick itself. And he would ask people, “have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick?” That is just the most amazing thing. It’s not that he didn’t feel remorse about the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, but that he still always saw the other side of everything and the ridiculous side of things, too.

My jaw drops...

First at the story that Teddy thought this was funny...

Second, that Newsweek's Ed kKein seems to think that yukking it up about a dead girl somehow shows Kennedy in a good light.

Comments Ed Morrissey:

If nothing else, it puts to rest the notion that Kennedy’s remorse balances out the undeniable cowardice of his actions at Chappaquiddick.  Even allowing for the best possible spin on his actions that day, what kind of person jokes about an incident that left a young woman dead in the back of his own car?  Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) got high marks from some for joking about his arrest for indecency and acknowledging his public humiliation, but the only thing that died in the X-rated theater was Reubens’ television show.

It does set free Kennedy’s critics to talk at length about Chappaquiddick and its proportion to Kennedy’s public life.  After all, if Kennedy thought it was a topic for humor in private, then it certainly is a valid topic for serious analysis of his life as well.

One must consider the circumstances and motivations around someone's behavior in assessing its moral and ethical dimensions. Reagan's coldhearted refusal to spend sufficient money on AIDs was rooted in his demented notion of best public policy within limited resources. The unfortunate events at Chappaquiddick, on the other hand, were understandable and unavoidable costs in Senator Kennedy's relentless humanitarian quest to wet his whistle and his wick. Comparing the two is silly.

. . .in the history of this great country. This is what Charlie did regarding Kennedy: He took a timeline of his legacy, skipped over all the good this man did, pinpointed the bad and blasted it onto the radio and his blog. He is the definition of a "Reflexive Opponent." They will ONLY make arguments and accusations, whether factual or false, that further their agenda. In Charlie's case, that agenda is Republican=good, Democrat=bad. The more you do this, the less credible your argument becomes.

He of you who is without sin shall cast the first stone. Surprise, surprise Kennedy was a profoundly conflicted human. Ask yourself how your life might have changed if you had two older siblings assassinated in public slayings.

How ironic the media is calling TK the “Lion”. I thought Lion was the symbol of courage. There was expert testimony in the drowning that Mary Jo might lived for several hours from the air pocket in the overturned car. Courage would have been getting help and attempting to rescue her. Sebelius says we should now ask ourselves “What Would Teddy Do?”. I think we know the answer.

Humor in Chappaquiddick? From errah, Ted? From the standpoint of courage and decency, he wasn't half the man his older brothers were. I doubt whether the Kopechne is looking for jokes about the situation.

Do you think he asked anybody for jokes about his brothers? That sense of humor can be found in prison, where other crazy people can be found. If this guy thought it was such a great thing, why didn't he write this when he was living?

I thought TWP meant that Senator Kennedy made the world a better place by leaving it.

This is one of the PRIME examples of the arrogant, immoral, hypocritical people that most politicans have become. To laud this man for the amazing things he did for the *downtrodden* is completely astounding. There couldn't have been anyone more downtrodden than the woman who was left for dead by him. He had no scruples, no morals, and no virtue. As with ALL arrogant, pompous politicans who live as *the real life* doesn't apply to them*, his selfishness speaks volumes of the man he truly was!
