THE JS LAYOFFS: UPDATED

By Charlie Sykes

How deep are the cuts? The paper now has half the staff it had a few years ago.

From the Newspaper Guild:

On Tuesday, Journal Sentinel Inc. announced it had cut its staff by 92. This reduction included the permanent layoffs of 34 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newsroom employees represented by the Milwaukee Newspaper Guild, as well as the voluntary buyouts taken by 32 members of our bargaining unit and five managers.

It was the largest layoff and second-largest buyout in our newsroom's history. By comparison, when The Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Sentinel merged in 1995, 70 to 80 newsroom staffers took buyouts and 21 members of our unit were laid off.

This is a very difficult day for all of us in the newsroom, not only for those who are losing their jobs, but also for those who remain. As we deal with the loss of our colleagues,
we face the task of putting out the best newspaper and online product we can with about one-third less staff than we started the year with, and about half the staff we had a few years ago.

Email from former JS staffer John Mollwitz, who cautions that there may be some errors/omissions:

As you probably read in this morning's story, the company announced 92 departures, including 37 newsroom buyouts.  An estimated additional 30 people from the newsroom also were let go. More are likely.

While there is no official list, there's consensus on these names below. Other names may surface as the week goes on.

UPDATE:

Hi Charlie,

Can you please clarify on your blog that, although I left the JS on Friday, I did not get a buyout nor was I laid off. I gave the paper six weeks of notice when I accepted a new job in California to wrap up some projects and ease a transition. Since I gave notice a week BEFORE the buyout period opened I was ineligible. I really hope you will clarify that. Believe me I wish I had been able to take it.

Why do you cons subscribe to the JS? If it doesn't come out of Sykes' or Rushy's mouth you won't believe it anyway.

No more Waukesha edition; no more staff suburban coverage; no more local reviewers and critics for books, music, theater; no more local editorial cartoonists. And yet the publisher says the newspaper's emphasis will remain "local." How stupid does she think readers are?

Who reads Eugene Kane? And if so why? He is not the problem. The problem is the people running it have no clue who or what their customer base is.

Until the J/S figures out that their customer base is to the Center Right not Center Left, then and only then will there be any hope. For a business to be so out of touch with their customer base as J/S is and do nothing to address that problem is just plain stupid. They can blame lost ad revenue, talk radio, changed lifestyles, Craig’s List etc., but the simple fact is they are not reporting for the people they want to buy the paper, only at them. They have no one to blame but themselves.

I agree with Mike. Cut loose Kane and his racist rants. Perhaps Barry via Rahm sent a memo to JS "requesting" his continued employment.

Organizations are funny. JS folks will double down and do a bunch more of what (will) put them out of business in the first place. We can expect bitter columns and slanted stories blaming a military- industrial-vast-right-wing- conservative conspiracy or similiar. And finally, we'll say - Journal Sentinel?? Wasn't that a newspaper once published in Milwaukee? I think it kept getting smaller in intelligence, content and size, until it finally disappeared altogether.

We cancelled our Journal Sentinel subscription this morning. We’ve been meaning to do it for years; this recent news gave us all the more reason. I told the JS weeks ago that I wanted Eugene Kane and his racist columns gone, JS person on phone said he was untouchable. So now we are gone.

Perhaps the fact that we had to read most of the news on the buyouts/layoffs on a WTMJ blog and, similar, via Milwaukee Magazine is symptomatic of the lack of reporting these days at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. They aren't even providing detailed coverage of the story that is right under their nose.

My apologies to Mark Katches, but as I told you this is still a floating story fraught with errors. This is a story that needs to be covered with objectivity, as I have told Steve Smith, CEO of Journal Communications. How we get our news is important to all of us. We need to talk about it. A Sunday Insight topic? /s/MOLL

There is one easy way to fix the problem, stop with the bias reporting and people, like me would consider buying the paper.
