VIDEO: LOSING THOSE JOBS

By Charlie Sykes

The latest from our video reporter, Rebecca Kleefisch: Job Losses. With unemployment nationwide climbing--it's expected to hit 10%--and the pain being felt acutely here at home, I talked to people who are done complaining and are offering suggestions. Here's what folks at the Jefferson Co. Fair said they'd do to attract and keep jobs in Wisconsin.

In my industry I can tell if consumers are spending. My workload and that of my colleagues and those in companies who do the same type of work has fallen off sharply this year. People are definitely holding on to their money.

Bill the Broker is right. Investors are holding on to money right now due to the threat of additional taxation on dividends and the threat of massive economy killing gov. regulation from crap and tax.

@ snowbird, look closely, people are not saving either, their holding. This market will take another pretty good dip again before it starts a recovery. There will be much more job loss. Listen to the independent sources on the market, not the "Media"

While state taxes are a problem, less consumer spending due to a higher savings rates plays a role as well. Go figure, savings rates are the lowest in decades and people save; when rates were 3-5% they spent. But for .05% people save.

Please forgive me, but Brian H is closer to right than the simple calls to "cut taxes". The only thing worse than out of control spending and high taxes is OOC spending and LOW taxes. Cut spending first. A LOT. Then cut taxes to match.

Another question for liberals. Do the higher union labor wages at GM result in a better car than what Toyota or Honda produce? Should we as a Country subsidize union wages that are not supported by the market? Will someone subsidize my pay?

Why do liberals always start from the assumption that whatever government spends must be worth it in the great services we receive? Has it ever even occurred to a liberal to contemplate government waste? The existing evidence makes this a no brainer.

LOTS of companies moved to California under Schwarzenegger's hefty tax breaks - look where that got them. They have more debt now than most countries. You people act like you cut taxes and its a perfect solution with no consequences. WRONG ! !

Contrary to the heading, "I talked to people who are done complaining and are offering suggestions." Sounded to me like a lot of complaining with one suggestion - stop taxing. You know what happens when offer really nice tax breaks - see California.

Case in point. New Orleans got rid of their teachers union and the students scores went wayyyyyyyyy up. Why. Because without unions crappy workers can be FIRED and replaced with good employees. You know, ones that actually do their jobs.

Maddog I see what you mean. Got rid of all those union auto workers. We sure don't need any more people paying taxes. I'm sure that they will be just fine getting title 19 and food stamps. Your tax dollars hard at work. Bust da unions.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could move the entire state government one county east, from Dane to Jefferson? There seems to be something in the water in Madison that keeps its denizens from the clear thinking displayed by the Jeffersonians at the fair.
