WWJDF?By Charlie SykesWho would Jim Doyle Free? Voting around 3 a.m. (based on the timing of this blog post) Democrats approved his plan to gut truth in sentencing and let hundreds of convicted felons loose from state prisons. Here's how it would work: *An inmate who is sentenced for a misdemeanor or for a Class F to Class I felony that is not a violent offense may earn one day out of confinement for every two days served. *High Risk or Violent Class F to Class I Felonies, and Class C to Class E Felonies. Specify that certain inmates who are ineligible under the above provision may earn one day out of confinement for every three days served. *An inmate sentenced to a Class C to Class E felony may earn one day out of confinement for every 5.7 days served.
Here is the list of Felonies and Misdemeanors. Do you think the average law-abiding person wants people who commit these crimes out on the street early?

@Bigcat said, "You wanted cuts in the budget...this makes the most sense." How about the nearly $4 million we spend on the state arts board? Doyle requested an INCREASE from previous budget. Dept of tourism spending $16 million in '09. Gut that - tourism is a great thing, but right now we should spend zeron on anything doesn't immediately and directly return money to the state. GAB's $5 million is bad investment. Significant cuts to the Ed. Communications Board's $18 million. Plenty of options.

No, Bill the Broker, don't release them into Madison at large - let's put them directly them into the Governor's neighborhood

Puhleeze, we here at the Cape would be so thrilled to take your ne'er-do-wells off your hands, so to speak. After blueberry season, we could employ them as warning bouys, putting them offshore in rafts and dinghys, as a picket line,to keep those infernal wind turbines out of sight. The W. Cronchites and the J. Taylors (not to namedrop) among others would be so appreciative. I am quite sure a few measley pennies might find their way into the "guvs" campaign coffers. Happy scofflawing, teddy!

You sir and people with your frame of mind are the problem, not part of the solution. Please send all of your money in to help offset the current budget crisis. You are too stupid to control this money yourself, and will do much better as a mentor/victim of these released prisoners. Please invite them into your inner circle of mentor/victims, so they find inner peace.....

It has been a few years since I checked the claim that MN had a "similar" crime rate to WI. Turned out not to be accurate. Don't know about current data. Bureau of Justice Statistics data show the highest rate of recidivism is among the "non violent" offenders about to be released.

I think that TIS works if 5 years was just 5 years in prison. No early release on probation. The Councils on State Governments believes the increase in the prison pop is because reoffenders are sent back for infractions of parole. http://www.wisbar.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=News&TEMPLATE=/CM/ContentDisplay.cfm&CONTENTID=80311. There will be an increased cost to hiring more agents to oversee these convicts.

The fact is that truth in sentencing has not worked and has not lowered the crime rate. All it is succeeding in doing is bankrupting the State. If you are going to cut the budget you need to go to the places where the vast majority of money is spent and that is corrections. What will we get from the right?Be afraid, be very, very afraid. Explain please why Minnesota has 8,000 prisoners compared to our 22,000 and spending $472 million compared to our 1.2 billion and really isn't a scary place.

@BIGCAT.. As I stated before just because you release these felons from prison doesn't mean the costs go away. Taxpayers still have to pay to track them (this includes paying more state employees to do check ups and other monitoring methods). Undoubtedly many (not all) of them will also have to go on to social programs that are also funded by taxes. So in these tough economic times this budget ends up costing MORE in the long run. GOP using scare tactics? YES because people should be scared!
23801862 Flag for moderationFriday, May 29 at 7:02 AM Mark wrote ...
We cannot release non-convicted terrorists from Gitmo because no one wants them in the neighborhood. And it's a pretty sure thing that they will return to their ways. BUT here in Wisconsin we can release convicted criminals back into our neighborhoods. Makes a lot of sense doesn't it???

So we return the prison system to the pre 1998 policy of time off for good behavior. We expand community corrections and cut prison costs. This is what you have to do in tough economic times. Instead, what the GOP does is try to scare people into believing their will be murderers and rapists running free (there won't) so they can try to win a few votes back to their aging, withering party. Your scare tactics have become tired. You wanted cuts in the budget...this makes the most sense.

So we save on costs that would have been there by keeping these felons in prison. However, I doubt that will offset the costs needed to track these felons and pay for additional officers needed for calls and patrols thanks to the felons that will in most cases commit crimes again. Most importantly there is the intangible cost of insecurity and loss of piece of mind and safety by the law abiding citizens of Wisconsin. Sullivan, Plale, Carpenter!
