Democratic Congressman is already floating the idea.
A wide range of sweeping changes to the 401(k) system were proposed Tuesday at a hearing on how the market crisis has devastated retirement savings plans.
Chief among them was eliminating $80 billion in tax savings for higher-income people enrolled in 401(k) retirement savings plans.
This was suggested by the chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor.
“With respect to the 401(k), it appears to be a plan that is not really well-devised for the changes in the market,” Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., said.

So this is not merely speculation.....
The savers are now financing the $700 billion bailout along with those who spent -- and may be forced to foot an even bigger bill as the baby boomers retire, says Wilcox, a former economist for the Securities and Exchange Commission who blogs here.
"If lots of people don't save and end up upon retirement being poorer than they would like to be, there will certainly be pressure to impose taxes on working people to more richly fund the retirements of individuals who have not saved," he says. "You'll see political pressure for wealth transfer -- and if you have saved responsibly, you'll be paying for people who have not."
Wilcox argues that savers who are dutifully contributing to their 401(k) plans face a real risk, because they won't pay taxes on the money until they retire. "It's easy for me to imagine 10 years from now a political candidate saying, ‘We have all these people with $3 million in their 401(k) plans and we need to impose taxes on those people and shore up Social Security for people who didn't have access to these 401(k)s,'" he says. "It's a big fat target for politicians." (And another disincentive to saving.)

Is anything considered un-American anymore. I thought we had organizations in place that policed unamerican activities in our Government. Changing the constitution so the government can controll our lives all in our behalf seems to fit the bill. And what about the new socialistic order, all this change, and why does'nt someone stop ACORN from regestering the cast of disney and God knows who else to vote. One more thing, Anyone know what color the american flag is going to be under Land Obama.

Obama just admitted he's a Socialist (Capital S) in his comments to the plumber - he said, "We just want to spread the wealth around..." In other words, take your and my money and give it to people who haven't earned it - that's wah his 95% "tax-cut" is all about - how can he give a "tax-cut" to the 40% who don't pay taxes?? -- it's a Socialist re-distribution of wealth, that's how - hide your money under your mattress, people

Should we just pool everyones 401K and then redistribute it evenly and buy a big screen TV for all those that don't want to work so they can have something to do at home? Makes me so glad we have proudly lived debt free and taught our children the importance of living in your means. We are on the brink of a disaster and this country will be divided like never before. I believe McCain will appoint the right people because at least he knows what his weaknesses are, Obama, not so.

Similar to Patrick Henry, for several years I've predicted an eventual raid on 401(k) accounts by the government. I wasn't aware that anyone in Congress has already raised the idea, though. Look for the income redistributors to apply descriptions such as "excessive" and "surplus" to the 401(k) accounts that they will target. Once again the responsible are punished to bail out the irresponsible. Frightening times indeed.

The cash and barter market is coming - no sales tax, no income tax. The more they tighten their grip, the more will slip thru. But I agree with Patrick and Amy - we have also discussed the complete futility in making the right decisions only to get screwed in the name of being "fair" to those that don't.

Amy, I've been saying the same things you said for years now. We have paid off our house, have three vehicles with over 120,000 miles each, don't eat out much, etc. I'm really, really afraid that the government will look at us in the future and say "oh, you have enough savings on your own, so we'll stop your social security payments to pay for someone else that spent all their money". So what I'm going to do is my own little revolution and cheat on taxes any way I can. This is the future w/Obama

It is a certainty that taxes on those who have worked hardest to save will rise in order to finance programs for those who have not.

Looks like it's time to start putting money in the mattress again. Really - I give up. I'm going to quit my job, go on rent assistance and food stamps, and spend my days sitting at home. Why work? Why save? Why do good for yourself? Come Jan 20, it's all going to be taken by socialists anyway.

I blame you Charlie. You are an effective tool for whipping up Wisconsin folks and making us look like a bunch of angry psychos to the rest of the nation. Nice work.

I've been telling everyone I know for months on end about Rep. George Miller's, D-Calif 401K comments. Jesse Jackson proposed a similar idea a few years back (as a form of reparations) But when you hear a caller to your show say he would vote for a "fence post" over McCain you realize you are dealing with some mental midgets on the Obama side so the 401K warning will fall on deaf ears. We still have our 401K program. So far...
