McCAIN'S SPEECH

By Charlie Sykes

I heard the speech last night described as "workmanlike," which is poli-speak for uninspired. That doesn't mean it wasn't effective, but if Palin hit a home run, McCain hit a double. This was not, however, a red-meat speech aimed at the conservative base (although there was a lot in it for conservatives)... it was aimed at independents and swing voters and it may have been effective in reaching out to them...

From Powerline:

McCain's speech can validly be criticized on various grounds, most of which John covered in his post below. It was flat at times. McCain seemed almost to be going through the motions when he talked specifics (sort of) on domestic policy. His recitation of specific hardship cases in various swing states struck me as lame, and he didn't really clear make it clear what he was doing to "fight for" these individuals. (As an aside, one of the cases was the family of Matthew Stanley of New Hampshire. When I was with McCain, he left the reporters on the back of the bus to call that family). And, though McCain perked up when he got to foreign policy, even here he wasn't as compelling as I expected. Thus, in many ways, Barack Obama probably gave a better speech, qua speech, last week.

But with all that said, I think McCain may well have connected better with the American people on an emotional level than Obama did. And nothing matters more than that.

For McCain seemed more real and more sincere than Obama, and he seemed to be speaking more from the heart. This was certainly true when he brought his speech to a rousing close with a humble recitation of his experiences in Vietnam (including the concession that "they broke me"), followed by his seamless transition to an impassioned appeal for service to country.

Bill, I saw your post yesterday but had no time to answer so I got up early this morning and was going to apologize for my insults. HOWEVER, before I did I reread some of your posts to me, and others, and reviewed the insults YOU made (Caribou Barbie, hypocrites, etc). I admit you are not as bad as steve & nelson so unfortunately I have to classify you as collateral damage. When you sleep with the enemy (liberals) sometimes you can get wounded.

All you need now is watch the interview of Obama on Fox in the evenings this week. He can not give a straight answer about the war, a preview of what he would be as commander in chief. He would be a real war mongerer to proof his "gravitous". Of course we could get hit again, and oh my gosh ... this means war! At least with McCain, we know he has been there. No, I won't look forward to future speeches.

Charlie, You are dead wrong about McCain's speech. Check out the ratings and the faces in the crowd. He moved people, and perfectly set the stage for a real people versus unprepared metrosexual fall campaign. Partisan ideologues were not his audience, real people are -- and they were moved. Get off the cocktail circuit!

Walt you might want to check McCain's voting record. He may have disagreed with W on some issues but in the end he supported him. Why do you always have to insult me? It only shows your ignorance when you do. Oh that's right you have quit being silent and now you are standing up to us crazy liberals. You sir, are a moron.

Stacey, congratulations, many years ago I faced the same problem until I realized two things. First, by keeping silent I was not doing THEM any favors, or myself, besides I also found people that agreed with me. Second, by facing those that disagree with your politics you learn to argue the point better because since liberals live a lie they don’t have a justifiable argument to give you back, that’s why they have to make stuff up like they did to Sarah Palin and her family.

Most of my in-laws are Democrats and form their opinions from 10 second sound bytes about those "big business" Republicans. I bite my tongue and remain silent at all family events for fear of a "beat-down". NO MORE! I know if faced with my wife's six brothers and their ignorance, I can look to my right and know in my heart that John McCain has my back. I would follow an old and broken McCain into battle before I would a hoop-shootin', above my pay grade, narcissistic community organizer.

Bill, you really don’t pay attention, do you? McCain has been disagreeing with Bush for years and you just noticed it TODAY. I’m telling you that Public Broadcasting Station is rotting your brain, it you donate money to it I’d demand my money back. Obama didn’t throw his people under the bus until he started getting bad press over them, class HUH!

Bill, McCain admonished (and probably ticked off) a lot of Republicans last night, pointing out that many of them had abandoned their principles and therefore the people.

Please explain to me how the Republicans can run as the party of change when they have held control for the past 8 years. I thought all of you folks loved W? If you do then you should have been insulted last night because McCain basically agreed with Obama on the state of our country. You folks have critized Obama for throwing people under the bus and McCain just threw W under his straight talk express.

Eileen Duffy, you’ll be glad to know that you are not alone. I have a sister in law in Massachusetts (liberal democrat) that has NEVER voted for a Republican, but will this year. We couldn’t even exchange political e-mails. Obama gave her an excuse to not vote and now Sarah Palin has absolutely sealed the deal for her. She’s sending ME political e-mail now. I have a daughter in San Diego who’s also never voted for a Republican, except for this year. I think blue states will turn RED this year.

Troy - the left is retorting Palin's "community organizer" comment by saying "Jesus was a community organizer," but something tells me they'd be less than thrilled to see the real Jesus return to earth...

I just got off the phone with my 35 yr old daughter who said she thought the Palin/McCain team Rocked! She listened to McCain last nite and was genuinely moved to the point of seriously considering voting McCain/Palin. I am so proud that she listened to the speech(s) to make an informed decision instead of relying on the mainstream media. Also, I was very impressed with McCain last nite, especially the 2nd part of the speech and I will be voting McCain/Palin.

Coming after Palin,Jesus Christ could have risen from the dead, came to Minn, and said something and still wouldn't have been as good as Palin. On the other hand, just like his life, you get what you see. That is what you want,a guy that is going to be there for you,and never disappear.
