THE SPEECH: A PREVIEW

By Charlie Sykes

No, he won't be wearing a toga. But here are some early excerpts. Not awful, but a lot of boilerplate... stuff we've heard over and over again already. But, then, we've never heard them from the lips of the Anointed One in the sacred precincts of Invesco Field.

Now let there be no doubt. The Republican nominee, John McCain, has worn the uniform of our country with bravery and distinction, and for that we owe him our gratitude and respect. And next week, we’ll also hear about those occasions when he’s broken with his party as evidence that he can deliver the change that we need.

“But the record’s clear: John McCain has voted with George Bush ninety percent of the time. Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush was right more than ninety percent of the time? I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to take a ten percent chance on change.”

Yawn... didn't we hear that from Joe Biden last night>

Bye-Bye glen! Yep, hopefully, America's not going to be the socialist utopia you may have envisioned... Thank God!

Well glen, this may NOT be the country you think it is. Obama sounded kind of angry last night and I don’t think America in an angry nation. You also might want to hold onto that fork for now, you don’t want to eat crow with your fingers.

The best summation is by Krauthammer: The oddity of this convention is that its central figure is the ultimate self-made man, a dazzling mysterious Gatsby. The palpable apprehension is that the anointed is a stranger -- a deeply engaging, elegant, brilliant stranger with whom the Democrats had a torrid affair. Having slowly woken up, they see the ring and wonder who exactly they married last night.

The "chosen one" has spoken and the world is not over (yet). Now that Obama has had his big moment he will likely get the bump in the polls that most expect. But now is the time that conservatives must come together like never before. Now is the time to begin to get the excitement that this party has been lacking for years. McCain was hardly my first choice but the alternative of Obama is just too dangerous. Now is the time to remind people just how dangerous liberalism is for America.

If America doesn't vote for Obama after that vision for america it's not the country i think it is. Put a fork in the old man.

Do you even know McCain's middle name? Why do you throw in Obama's? I hope you aren't ignorant enough to buy into that "He's a secret Moooooslim" nonsense. Someday I hope we can rid our country of such ignorance and xenophobia.

This speech reminds me of 2004, "so last century." I hope the next weeks convention blows this weeks one away. In the last election cycle, what has changed? 1)gas prices doubled in two years 2) Our military has improved, so the Democrats are chanting get Osama. 3) I wish I could have waited to buy a house. 4) Upstart candidates are running for office, may this continue.

I think his speech writers fell far from the mark they were expected to hit. The more NBC showed his bitter America hating wife made the whole moment all that more repugnant as well. So, he's had his two moments and now let him take all his rhetoric and go back to his elitist life. Bye bye Barack, don't come ya'll!

I know how much the left doesn't like Bush and maybe some on the right, but I would rather have be compared to Bush then Rev Wright,Tony Resco and William Ayers. What does that say about the USA where it is OK to be associated with a guy that bombed the Pentagon.

Oh geez! Watching the Dumb Covention, these people are nothing but foolish liars. Stop voting for these idiots! The only capacity that America needs B Hussein Obama is for him to just go away and take the Clintons, Pelosi, and Dumb Harry with them, then America will be great again. P.S. plz take that idiot Gwen Moore with you too!
