WEDNESDAY HOT READ: PRESIDENT SAYS DRILL, OIL DROPS

By Charlie Sykes

Probably a coincidence. But Larry Kudlow says drill, drill, drill.

Traders took a look at a feisty and aggressive George Bush and started selling the market well before a single new drop of oil has been lifted. What does this tell us? Well, if Congress moves to seal the deal, oil prices will probably keep on falling. That’s the way traders work. They discount the future. Psychology and expectations can turn on a dime.

The congressional ban on offshore drilling expires September 30, so that becomes a key date. A new report from Wall Street research house Sanford C. Bernstein says that California actually could start producing new oil within one year if the moratorium were lifted. The California oil is under shallow water and already has been explored. Drilling platforms have been in place since before the moratorium. They’re talking about 10 billion barrels worth off the coast of California.

There’s also a “gang of 10” in the Senate, five Republicans and five Democrats, that is trying to work a compromise deal on lifting the moratorium. So it’s possible a lot of action on this front could occur much sooner than people seem to think.

So I repeat: Drill, drill, drill. Deregulate, decontrol, and unleash the American energy industry. Those hated traders will then keep selling oil as the laws of supply and demand and free markets keep working.

Dave V is obviously drowning in his Kool-Aid. He didn't even read my post. I said" Drilling WILL SEND THE MESSAGE THAT WE ARE NOT GOING TO BE CONTROLLED BY FOREIGN OIL SUPPLIERS!" The problem ISN'T the amount of available oil-IT"S WHO HAS IT!!!

Dave 5 is a Rove-esque plant sent to mobilize the base in time when Repub prospects are grim. Oops! Sorry I wrote that.

Thousands of years of civilization, marketplaces, buying/selling of goods/services, bartering, Dave wants facts. Dave, you cant even see the fact forest for the fact trees. Heres an immediate solution that will immediately cause lower gas prices at the pump: REPEAL THE MINIMUM MARK-UP LAW! That took me all of 2 seconds Dave. Anything else I can help you out with? Let me shoot another hole in your lunacy-we're producing how much ethanol now? How much has gas dropped? Uh-huh, thats what I thought.

Kurt/Elkhorn: This is where you brain-washing fails you. We could drill holes in and around America 'till it looks like a billion-acre putting green, and we would STILL NOT HAVE ENOUGH OIL. There is NOT ENOUGH OIL UNDER OUR SHORES AND SOIL, and NOT A SINGLE ENERGY ANALYST will state otherwise. Ever wonder why America has rejected your failed ideology of conservatism? It's because you continue to embrace failure on all fronts. Drilling to energy independence is just one more of them.

jimmyjagoff - Nice attempt at subject-changing. Not gonna work. Any other brilliant "rebuttals" from the Syked-Out crowd? Didn't think so. Don't worry folks, Chuckles the Clown will be back on the air tomorrow to tell you all what to think, say and write. Hang in there, my easily-led friends!!

DV - so tell us, Oh Wise One, why exactly DID the price of oil drop the day after Bush lifted the XO on off shore drilling? To respond to your post of 9:24 - Prices are down today, but OF COURSE that had nothing to do with the drop in oil prices. You idiot (and stating the truth is not name calling).

Mary: "Name ANY policy that will lower the price at the pump in the short-term." Answer: Releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve will have an immediate short term effect on prices. Interesting - lots of personal attacks, straw men and red herrings. Still no facts. Still no rebuttal for the fact that Bush's own Department of Energy reports states that drilling will lower oil prices by about 75 CENTS by 2025 (2 cents per gallon at the pump). Predictable for the Syked-Out Crowd

Dave - You're the pot calling the kettle black. LOL Interesting piece on the Today Show this morning. The reporter directly attributed the $10/bbl. drop in crude to the price simply rising to it's breaking point. No mention of that drop starting the day after the markets opened following Bush's lifting the OCS ban on drilling. Remember, democrats still believe imposing a windfall profit tax on big oil will bring the cost down.

Hey, Dave! Name ANY policy that will lower the price at the pump in the short-term. Bio-fuels? No. Wind? No. Suing OPEC to produce more? No. Windfall profits tax on oil companies? No. Maybe, just maybe, Dave, if we had started 10 years ago when CLinton refused to drill in ANWR, we'd have brought new supplies online for TODAY. But we didn't and so we pay the price. Having fun, Dave?

Dave V, Stating the intention to drill will have an immediate impact on the oil futures markets. Since oil will be a commodity in demand for the near and short term, increasing the supply, even by a small amount, will help keep costs from rising. Since the long-term alternatives are a ways away, exploration for oil will help provide a short-term stopgap. Dave V, why are you phobic about drillng? Do you like higher fuel costs and think that's a good thing?

Hey,Dave V-Have another glass of liberal Kool-Aid! Drilling may not Directly impact the oil supply, but it will show foreign suppliers we aren't going to be controlled by them-WE CAN GO ELSEWHERE! Otherwise why did the price of crude drop so much so fast this week? A little more reality & less CNN goes a long way!

Gee, I could only SPECULATE as to what caused the price drop! Need we say more!

Charlie: Good to see you at the forefront of conservative feel-good politics. Nobody ever said that conservative propagandists should convey actual facts. But should the urge ever strike, here are the facts that you seem so eager to withhold from your audience: 1 Drilling will do nothing to ease price at the pump 2 Drilling will not make us make us energy independent 3 Drilling is not a viable long-term energy solution It fails on all fronts, but it makes great feel-good policy for the GOP!

I thought the best way to attack petro prices was to sue OPEC (or raise the gas tax) Go figure.
