TUESDAY HOT READ: DRILL, DAMN IT

By Charlie Sykes

Powerline reacts to the president's decision.

This morning President Bush rescinded the executive order that has prohibited drilling on the outer continental shelf since 1990. Many of us have wondered why he didn't do that some time ago. Rescinding the order will not, of course, allow exploration to go forward, since Congress has also banned exploration of the shelf. But what President Bush has done is to focus attention squarely where it belongs: Congressional Democrats are now the only force standing between American consumers and access to vast quantities of petroleum.

Congress's ban on outer continental shelf exploration expires, and is renewed, annually. It is scheduled to expire in just 78 days, which means that if the Democrats want to continue keeping gas prices high, they will have to act--publicly--just days before November's election.

The President of the Institute for Energy Research, Thomas Pyle, issued this statement in response to the President's action this morning:

The federal government has made it illegal to produce taxpayer-owned energy from taxpayer-owned lands for nearly three decades. That’s a fact consumers need to understand as they cope with skyrocketing prices for everything from groceries to gasoline. Most Americans understand the law of supply and demand, but they may not know that America is the only developed nation in the world that restricts access to its own offshore energy resources, or that an annual vote in Congress is require to continue that policy. That time of the year has come, and the next 78 days will be a critical period for America’s energy security.

Emphasis added. The extent to which the Democrats are depriving American consumers of their own energy resources is clearly indicated by this graphic, courtesy of the IER; click to enlarge:

I don't think oil will drop before the election, not because of the election anyway. Some lefty group was saying Bush had captured Bin Laden in June 2004 and was going to trot him out the day before the 2004 election. I'm cynical but I don't think either party has the power to drop the pump price overnight. And 'Liberal' there's plenty of blame for this mess for both parties, oh, and what's Pelosi's Congress' approval rating right now?

Drill it, drill it, drill it, drill it, now. In FLORIDA. NOW. Immediately. Today. Hurry. Don't delay. And the Dems will take Florida -- not just the Electoral College votes, but all the House seats. Of course, the "Drill it" campaign is not about oil prices. It's about digging for a propaganda slogan to take voters mind off the failures of conservatism.

Maddy, Kristin, both of you are awesome. Think Congress might let the ban fail just as the Messiah is elected? Not only will he heal the sick, water to wine, etc., but he LOWERED THE OIL PRICES. Pandering at the party level. Am I just cynical, or could they be that dirty?

I work six days a week and pay taxes. What part of that driving do you want me to eliminate liberals? I'm not carpooling and I'm not using mass transit-I'll just stop working. What part of my taxes are you going to eliminate spending to make up for? Drill here, drill now. I'm not offering this as a long term solution. I need food on my table today. The idea that we might have food fifteen years from now does not fill my family's belly today. Work on alternatives but drill here and drill now!

Look closely at the map showing open and closed areas to drill. Why would the democrats think the gulf coast is OK to drill? Because they don't like black people, right Kanye?

I believe oil prices will drop soon regardless of what happens on this issue. The prices we pay for oil are reflecting a bubble not unlike the mortgage bubble which recently burst. Americans ARE driving less, and consuming less fuel. China's subsidies for its citizens fuel consumption will end after the olympic games. When that happens, they'll use less fuel, too. What happens to prices when supply exceeds demand? I think we are about to witness a tremendous drop in oil prices.

Invest in alternatives, damn it. Conserve, damn it. And yes, drill, damn it. Jeb Bush has a nice compromise on this. Anyone listening? It's going to take a comprehensive plan. As President Bush has stated: there's no magic wand. Although, he waved it this week anyway. Magic wands take decades. Let's start working on it. I'm glad people are starting to care. Less than two years ago, my friends were buying huge SUV's. They made fun of my 4-door sedan. Who's laughing now?

Drilling won't do anything but ignore the fact that we need alternate energy sources. I don't care if your Conservative, Liberal, Socialist (woot) or on the Jedi Counsel, we all (and I do mean all) have to come together and come up with a solution, not an hypothesis. Not just the US, but the entire world, or we're all headed towards a Road Warrior situation. Oh and Charlie, thanks for making me feel better about myself every morning. "Today's going to suck, but at least I'm not Charlie Sykes."

Drill, Damn it. Need a fix? Sounds like some sort of junkie. It's sad we have come to this. We need it like the air we breathe.

Stop sending our soldiers to die for foreign oil (that's what the left thinks they're doing anyway-NO BLOOD FOR OIL!), drill here! STOP BANKROLLING THE MIDEAST AND HALLIBURTON, drill here! STOP OUTSOURCING JOBS OVERSEAS relevant to our energy needs at home, drill here! Stop supertanker oil spills and help the earth, drill here! HAVE THE AUDACITY TO HOPE FOR CHANGE-DRILL HERE!!! There's a conundrum or few for you lefties.

I don't know where some people are getting their numbers from. If we open up our known resources for oil drilling it would have a major postive impact on prices and this impact would occur before a drop of oil was extracted from the ground. I fear the Democratic party distortion machine is at work here where they are trying to convince people that we don't sit on a tremendous amount of oil resources and that even if we opened it up for drilling, it wouldn't significantly impact supply. Wrong!

Lets mandate reducing demand by making everyone take the bus. Even if you live on a farm. let's not produce any of our own oil to save the planet. After all, I can come up with a study that shows my cause is best overall if I dig drill down deep enough. (Pardon the pun.) Why drill if it's only going to reduce the cost of oil, after all drilling will not make oil free so ban the drill, ban the drill...

treindle nailed it. Double-so for Pelosi who can afford the gas anyway, so why should she care?

The stats can be verified through a quick google search. The larger point is that we can pump a little more oil ten years from now with off shore drilling but just like the oil we get from Alaska now it will go on the world market and do very little for high gas prices. I agree with treindl that this is all about getting a party reelected and has nothing to do with helping lower the cost of gasoline

The fact of the matter is we don't know until we drill.I forgot what country it was but they drill 75 times and got nothing. The 76th time they drilled they hit and now is energy independent.I don't care about prices not dropping right away because it takes time, but sooner or later we have to start.

Sorry, but you're selling a double serving of false hope here. The International Energy Agency is the expert here and it says increased US production would amount to a "hiccup" in world supply. I believe in protecting our earth and not exploiting it; however, I also believe in using the resourses that God has given us. The off shore drilling we do have existed before Katrina and proved that the whole process can withstand tremendous natural stress without ANY negative impact on the environment. Drilling will not be the quick fix that American's want, but it will help us to become an independant nation again. I believe the statistics in Bill's comment are inaccurate, but I'm not sure.

Stop calling it "drilling", Mr. Sykes. Have you learnt nothing of Newspeak from the left? We need a friendlier, more "New Age" energy mantra. We on the right don't support "drilling" any more. What we advocate is "Global Acupuncture"... -jjg DailyScoff.com

Interesting piece. Again, this is further proof that neither party actually wants to, or does, what is best for the American people. It's all a blame game, and it's all about getting your party re-elected. If you don't believe that, just check out this link. http://feingold.senate.gov/~feingold/releases/08/07/20080710.html Who to believe? How about no one? Neither party is telling the truth. They're just using smoke and mirrors to deflect blame and criticism. Both parties are WORTHLESS

Tuesday, Jul 15 at 8:32 AM Bill wrote ...

Whether you support off shore drilling or not do you really believe this would make a significant difference in gas prices. The US sits on 5% of the world supply of oil. The US consumes 25% of the world supply. The numbers just don't add up to this doing anything but making more money for the oil companies. It's pure politics and we will see how it plays out for both sides.
