KILLING TEEN JOBS

By Charlie Sykes

Dude, who stole my summer job?

WASHINGTON -

Finals week is over; summer is here. And thanks to misguided politicians, your teenager is more likely to be sitting in front of the television than waiting tables or scooping ice cream.

This year, it’s harder than ever for teens to find a summer job. Researchers at Northeastern University described summer 2007 as “the worst in post-World War II history” for teen summer employment, and those same researchers say that 2008 is poised to be “even worse.”

According to their data, only about one-third of Americans 16 to 19 years old will have a job this summer, and vulnerable low-income and minority teens are going to fare even worse.

The percentage of teens classified as “unemployed” — those who are actively seeking a job but can’t get one — is more than three times higher than the national unemployment rate, according to the most recent Department of Labor statistics.

One of the prime reasons for this drastic employment drought is the mandated wage hikes that policymakers have forced down the throats of local businesses. Economic research has shown time and again that increasing the minimum wage destroys jobs for low-skilled workers while doing little to address poverty.

According to economist David Neumark of the University of California at Irvine, for every 10 percent increase in the minimum wage, employment for high school dropouts and young black adults and teenagers falls by 8.5 percent. In the past 11 months alone, the United States’ minimum wage has increased by more than twice that amount.

Chris, please tell me what “facts” I posted were part of a “Republican debate 101” scenario. Bigcat used the AP Poll with no other follow up. First, are you deigning the fact that AP or CNN are liberal? If you are there is no saving you. Second, was I making a false statement when I said polls that use ELIGIBLE VOTERS are the most accurate and that polls can be skewed if certain questions are asked? How’s this, Fox News polls say that Obama cannot win the south, Hispanic or Jewish voters.

What? Some want to blame: the "economy", Bush, Clinton, the Unions, the Congress, and, of course, the Mexicans! Some here are bothered that others don’t understand how “American gov't” or the “three branches” work. We operate in a system of checks and balances. Congress makes laws, Prez can veto, Supreme Ct can rule both unconsitutional. The Fed is independent, appointed by Prez and approved by Senate when terms expire. We got in this together, we'll get out together. Mexicans? C'mon.

Is Charlie really "bigcat"? Egging us on with the typical Liberal drivel, just to draw commentary? I think "bigcat"'s repetitious emails are automatically generated by Charlie's computer. Why else do the exact same comments appear on repeated posts?

Republican debate 101: When in doubt, call facts liberal and make up your own that fit your already conceived conclusion.

Bigcat, thank you for that AP “poll” but it won’t work. Whenever liberals run out of ideas they find a liberal news outlet to do a “Poll”. A poll is just a snapshot in time that could change before the weekend is out but what liberals will reiterate for eternity. The Associates Press is more liberal than CNN, for Pete sake; even I can get those numbers if I polled blacks in South Chicago or college students from New York City. You need to look INTO the poll for numbers of ELIGIBLE voters.

Dear Amy, Who had the great idea for the economic stimulus payout? Who had the highest deficits in history? IS nothing Bush's fault? Is he your Messiah? http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080611/federal_budget.html?.v=2

While you continue to focus on partisan attacks from the republican smear and fear playbook, the nation moves closer to historic change. This is from the AP NEWS WIRE 6/11 "Monday, a Gallup poll showed that Obama's lead over McCain was wider than at any time since May 18 with 48 percent to 41 percent." Enjoy:)

Amy P, it is stunning, isn’t it how much bigcat DOESN’T know about what the three branches of our government are responsible for. I have been trying to explain it to her, or him, until my head hurts but it is like trying to educate a tree stump. I am serious when I say that I truly believe bigcat just wants to be part of the conversation whether or not he/she makes sense.

bigcat, you really don't know how American government works, do you? Hopefully, in the near future, they'll come up with a cure for BDS - you have a pretty severe case of it, my friend.

Funny we're talking about jobs here because as I look at the posts and comments, bigcat is all over them making me wonder if bigcat even has a job.

For some of the people who are in denial, it is an indisputable fact minimumn wage policy impacts employment particularly at the entry level end. This is not an arguable point! Certainly other factors impact jobs, but lets get over this nonsense put out by liberals that attempts to pull the wool over peoples eyes about this "unintended" consequence. In reality its not "unintended" because any idiot politician should know this by now!

So how about a federal summer jobs program. I'd be happy to head it up for say $2K to 2.5K/year. Just raise taxes to pay for it. Yea, that's the ticket.

Amy, Who had the responsiblity for oversight of the housing market and subprime loans? Who had the responsibility for submitting the largest budgets in the history of the country? That would be your president, the MBA with 7 failed businesses to his credit and one failed economy. His lack of leadership in the area of fiscal restraint(aren't you supposed to be in favor of that)has created a stye from which both parties are feasting at our expense. Don't lecture about ignorance wearing blinders.

I think part of it is also the economy.I know with this congress and what Obama what to do with taxes {both want to raise them} my family isn't doing much because we are trying to save what we can because what is going on,and what could go on with taxes.I am afraid what else that they want to tax.

Well yeah, but I think that's missing the bigger point. When the local mill (etc.) can hire Mexicans for backbreaking work at 6 or 7 dollars an hour, the opportunity cost for the average teenager stipulates that it doesn't "make sense" (seem profitable) to work for so little compared with leisure time. It also doesn't seem worth it from an eumployer's standpoint to hire a perhaps unreliable teenager for 3 months compared with an obedient (through necessity) llegal alien who can work year-round.

And all of the articles I've seen say that typical Summer employers are begging for help. High energy costs and lack of public transportation are keeping many teens from commuting to traditional recreation areas.

bigcat: Yet again, you show your ignorance. By the way, the economy started going in the tank when your beloved Democrats took office back in November, 2006. The Bush Administration doesn't set the laws or policies - the Democratic CONGRESS does that. You have them to thank for the bad economy.

Look to the unions for creating this problem. The dirty little secret is that the minimum wage is tied into union wages. When the minimum wage goes up, usually from union encouragement, the unions can collective bargain their wages up as well. When the union member wages go up so do the union dues (EVERY YEAR), that support the union bosses. Another dirty little secret is that union bosses are liberal democrats who support liberal politicians who increase the minimum wage in the first place.

The article, if you read it, also mentions another major factor "And the owner of Santa Barbara Ice Creamery — what was once a go-to summer job spot for Tucson, Ariz., teens — said that because of increased wages and dairy prices, she’s only relying on a few longtime employees. COuld it be the ECONOMY! as the obvious factor to this problem? That would be the Bush Administration at work. And, thanks to homeland security, here is another factor http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=754749
