***PAUL RYAN WILL JOIN ME LIVE THURSDAY IN THE 10 A.M. HOUR
Conservatives in the GOP desperately need leaders... and Congressman Paul Ryan is stepping up. What makes his proposal extraordinary is that Ryan is virtually alone among either party in addressing the looming entitlement crisis. Most of them are simply afraid of embracing even modest reforms, so they are leaving it to the 38-year-old Ryan.
Washington - Most lawmakers receive little attention when they introduce bills in Congress. That's especially true for House members in the minority party.
But Rep. Paul Ryan is generating excitement among conservative circles for a bill he introduced Wednesday that would reform Social Security, Medicare, the health care system and the tax code.
**
In case you missed, it, here is Ryan's Op-Ed in today's Wall Street Journal:
While Congress will have a partisan debate over the federal budget this week, there is a growing, bipartisan consensus about the greatest threat to our nation's long-term economic prosperity: the explosion of entitlement spending. Unfortunately, Washington is not planning to address that problem this week, or any time soon. By doing nothing, we are shackling our future with unsustainable debt and taxes.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the rest of government will consume nearly 40% of the economy by the time my three young children reach my age (38). This will require more than doubling the average tax burden of the past 40 years just to keep the government afloat. Continuing down this path will eventually strangle our economy.
To meet this challenge and secure our fiscal future, I'm introducing a comprehensive legislative plan called "A Roadmap for America's Future."

Andrew: I am not rich, but I have a job... I work for my family first, society second, and if there is anything left over the goverment may have that with my sincere blessing. Seems the greater bulk of the money you pay to the government is only to service debt, and it keeps getting bigger. W/R/T soylent green, I'd start with the socialists, as it might fit their political mindset anyway... let the government do you for "the greater good" You seem to have a mental disorder anyhow...

Cong Ryan has identified 4 problems that need solutions. It's just that his conservative nostrums are all duds. A market based reform of health care financing would be GREAT. But a REAL market based, consumer driven model needs (1) timely, accurate information, and (2) a market where that information can be used effective. Conservatives will NEVER address those because their corporate constitutencies don't want consumers to have an effective market.

America became the only country on earth with a huge middle class and the highest standard of living by letting the little people fend for themselves. It's only after we let the liberals enact stiff regulation and raise taxes for welfare programs that our standards have eroded. Capitalism works!

To 7:00 and 10:19 - do YOU want to pay the extra tax burden? Do YOU want Social Security to go bankrupt (which it will) by the time anyone below the age of 35 reaches retirement age? Our government is too bloated, and has mismanaged more than enough of our tax dollars. If a CEO ran his company the way our government does, they'd be in JAIL. Ryan's ideas are *MUCH* needed and a breath of fresh air. If you think this attacks the little guy, get a clue. Outrageous taxes hurt the little guy.

Typical GOP response to everything: Corporate welfare, tax cuts for the rich, and let the little people fend for themselves. Why not turn the elderly into soylent green while you're at it? Forgot to blame Mexicans and terrorists, btw.

We are in a terrible predicament, and need to address these problems. Unfortunately people like the 7:00 comment refuse to give up the entitlement teat. We're doomed, but at least Mr. Ryan has the courage to talk about Washington's dirty secret.

Sorry, but Ryan's "leadership" plan is DOA for good reason. 1. Health Care "reform": great, I get a $5,000 tax credit but have to buy my family's $12,000 insurance plan from an industry so powerful I have NO bargaining leverage. 2. Privatize Social Security. No thanks. 3. Switch Medicare to a $9,500 subsidy for elders to buy private insurance (with even LESS bargaining power) 4. Flat tax (2 tier) Millionaires love this. Ryan's "plan" is 4 of conservatism's biggest failures on steroids. DOA
