Michelle Malkin asks:
Does Barack Obama understand the concept of asymmetric warfare? Barack Obama complains that no one wants to talk about the “issues.” Well, his abject ignorance of warfare in the 21st century is an issue that can’t be emphasized enough.
...
From Purple Avenger at Ace of Spades:
By stating that Iran isn’t a threat because they spend much less on defense than the US, Obama displays a complete ignorance of how asymmetric warfare operates. The AQ “defense budget” for pulling off 9/11, was by comparison to the US, essentially zero.
An analysis of the Iranian order of battle and where they’ve been spending their defense dollars over the past 10 years would show that they are a serious threat in certain specific areas. They’ve been investing heavily in coastal batteries, anti-ship missile systems, silent diesel electric subs, and such. They could turn the narrow strait of Hormuz into an unnavigable scrap yard faster than the US Navy could stop them or the US Air force could neutralize those batteries and missiles.
Are the Iranians going to bomb NYC or invade Chicago? No. Can they be a major PITA to the rest of the world if they decided to suicidally squeeze oil shipments through the straight? Absolutely....
Jim Geraghty:
…in an era of asymmetrical warfare, a group’s budget and spending do not necessarily reflect the scope or danger of the threat. The 9/11 Commission report stated the attacks cost somewhere between $400,000 and $500,000 to execute, plus the cost of training the 19 hijackers in Afghanistan; the short-term costs alone to the U.S. from the attacks are estimated at $27.2 billion…Let’s look at those nations Obama describes as “tiny”…
And Powerline points out the contradictions:
Barack Obama, last night in Portland, on Iran: "They don't pose a serious threat to us."
Barack Obama, today, in Billings, Montana, on Iran: "I've made it clear for years that the threat from Iran is grave."
Can someone explain why it is, exactly, that Barack Obama is not a laughingstock?

so, Obama is smart and above criticism because he went to Harvard... and Bush is dumb because... he got his Masters at Yale...?? (And Bush got better grades than Kerry, as was pointed out last election.) Chris, your point is... ???

Bigcat, your pie in the sky world view is hilarious. You sound like those California flower children I met in the 60s. OK assuming you are right and we should ditch the cold war weapons because we don’t need them any more. You just stated the EASY solution in typical liberal fashion. Now pull your head out of your butt and tell us how we get Russia, China, India, Pakistan, France, Israel and Brittan to get rid of theirs. Don’t forget Iran, N. Korea, Syria and Al-Qaeda who want them.

Jim Geraghty: …in an era of asymmetrical warfare, a group’s budget and spending do not necessarily reflect the scope or danger of the threat If that is the case, we should be able to ditch our cold war era weapons systems and save hundreds of billions of dollars a year on defense. What is truly laughable is the Bush policies of fat, wasteful war contracts to buddies and lobbyists. Look at the GOA report on the administration's mismanagement of the money earmarked for IRAQ.

Little cognitive ability? Yeah, he only went to Harvard. Good call on that one.

Does Barack Obama understand the concept of asymmetric warfare? Of course not. In his years in the IL & US Senates, all those "Present" votes were for a reason - Obama wasn't paying attention. Obama was busy reading the church newsletter, community organizing, setting up the next deal with Rezko, or out having another cigarette. Obama is a man of little cognitive ability and what little mental resources Obama does have are focused on politics, not policy.

Chris: You're the one not putting Obama's remarks into context. He clearly said that if one looks at Iran's resources, we could crush them in conventional warfare--ignoring, of course, that the use of terror, can blunt our advantages, much in the way AlQaeda did on September 11th.

The way you blatantly manipulate facts and take quotes out of context is simply shameful. If you would've read his entire thought, you'd know Obama didn't say that Iran isn't a serious threat. He was making a comparison by saying that Iran is not AS serious a threat as (I think) the Nazis were. I may be remembering the country he compared to incorrectly, but the point is that the way you present Obama's quote in your article makes it appear the he contradicted himself. That wasn't the case.

"that Barack Obama is not a laughingstock?" He will be. The question is will it be before he gets a chance to take us all with him.

Obama IS a Laughingstock to me and cohorts on national defense - he has less, or worse, than a clue - he has all the typical Left-wing idyllic ideas about "getting together and talking out our differences" - just try it when they're cutting your throat...
