MEMO TO GOP: STAND FOR SOMETHING

By Charlie Sykes

Well, no kidding. Karl Rove tries to school Republicans on the meaning of this week's congressional loss

The string of defeats should cure Republicans of the habit of simply shouting "liberal! liberal! liberal!" in hopes of winning an election. They need to press a reform agenda full of sharp contrasts with the Democrats.

Absolutley true, but Karl Rove is the wrong guy to make the point. He has done more damage to the distinction between the parties than just about anyone in recent memory. For example, he is the guy who advocated the prescription drug bill and additional federal meddling in public education. He was the "Architect" of an administration that forgot that the Republican Party is supposed to be the party of frugality and fiscal restraint.

I actually think this downward Republican spiral began after Newt Gingrich stepped down and has never recovered since. Dennis Hastert? Give me a break. Not exactly a champion of ideas and a movement. Though they were able to still win elections running on the fumes of Ronald Reagan and the memories of the once potent Gingrich agenda, lack of true leadership and reform ideas eventually caught up to them.

Karl Rove is definitely on to something. Repubs will have to make distinctions on how they differ from Demos on taxes, the economy, and yes, energy, or else they could be a party in exile for some time. Back in '94 Newt gave them a framework of ideas in the "Contract." Where is the leadership, now? I'm afraid that what we have now are a bunch of RINOs.

My local party has been saying this for years.

Appropriate that the word "liberal" is quoted 3 times since we have three liberals running for President.
