BIG EASY DUMPS TEACHERS UNION; TEST SCORES GO UP

By Charlie Sykes

Interesting story out of New Orleans. Cause and effect?

Thanks Kurt/Elkhorn, I can always rely on a fellow patriot to watch my back against the common enemy, socialist and liberal democrats. It sure is hard, some times, trying to convince people like Geralrg, Big Cat, Steve, and others, that the world dose not revolve around them. You and I defended our country in war time and you would think that at least SOME liberals might want to help us continue to defend this nation as we grow old.

Richard, you are absolutely right. As a 23 year retired military man my first paycheck was $88 per month (1966). Even though food was supplied to me, my military contract only GUARANTEED me 1 meal per day which occurred often during my 2 tours in Vietnam. The military also supplied me a cozy little bunk to sleep in (with 60 other guys). Liberals, like Geralrg, only see teachers pay and never include teacher’s FREE healthcare and retirement benefits AND 3 month PAID summer vacations.

My 12 years in the U S ARMY tell me Walt is right on target. Geralrg has obviously never been to war or in the military at all. And thank you Walt for your service to this great nation. Too bad these lefties like Geralrg dont understand what goes into defending a nation or they wouldn't push the nanny-state envelope.

Geralrg you are wrong. The average enlisted person is the most underpaid worker in our country...I am not sure how many teachers loose body parts during those inservices but even training for an enlisted person can be deadly. Also, last time I checked the average teacher was generally able to stay with their families and not have to have the spouse use food stamps. I am also curious as to whether your average teacher's job requirements include dying...just want to put things into perspective...

Mary, I know I ran city/state together but the point I was making is that liberal democrats ruined everything in that state, including its cities, example, just look at OUR GOVERNOR. Doyle is a liberal democrat governor of the state of Wisconsin but he still manages to screw up the city of Milwaukee (school choice program). Conversely, wouldn’t a Conservative Governor of Louisiana have a positive impact on one of its major city schools? Or are liberals unable to make that leap?

Geralrg: I'll grant you that teaching is a difficult profession (I've got a number of educators in my family); however, the compensation over nine months isn't bad, the benefits are pretty sweet, and a good number of them can retire pretty early. It isn't all bad. Besides, I view teachers as "professionals" and professionals and unions shouldn't be a comfortable mix. I think I'd rather survive on my own merits, if I were them, and not depend on a union, which preserves the worst members.

UM... Geralrg... According to WEAC the average WI teacher made $43,466 in 04-05. This is not including the extremely generous benefits that they get. Also... How many months out of the year does the average teacher have off during the summer? And let's not forget that it is very hard to fire teachers who are not doing their jobs. Basically they are not as bad off as you want to suggest.

bigcat: Get rid of all unions? Naw, just the inefficient, monopolistic, public employee ones that get in the way of real progress. Just a dream I have--that and the four clones of Samuel Alito that I'd like to see on the SCOTUS...:)

Bigcat when the unions fail to do their jobs (such as many public school systems) there is nothing wrong with getting rid of those unions. Too many union members are more interested in PROTECTING their job than DOING their job. BTW... What would be wrong with having private companies taking over fire, police and education IF they can do a better job for less money? We have seen that in some situations they can do a better job at education than unions.

I'm not even going to be a smart-aleck about this one. I'm going to pose some very simple questions, and I'd appreciate an answer to them from you Mr. Sykes. No one forces people to be teachers, granted. However, teachers are the most underpaid workers in our country for what they do. Do you think its easy to teach kids? Why shouldn't teachers have a union to give voice to their concerns? If you made $30,000 a year for a thankless job I'm sure you'd appreciate an organized support base.

Should we get rid of all unions? Maybe we should just let the corporations run every aspect of police, fire, education, and gov't. Let's make America SAFE for big business!

Walt, New Orleans is a city, not a state. They have a mayor, not a governor.

All these years, living with a democrat administration, liberals proved they were not equipped to handle anything from rampant crime, poverty, education or a major catastrophe. New Orleans now has a VERY conservative Governor (Bobby Jindal) and look what he has done since January. Liberals always “say” they can do things better but it's the true Conservatives that get out there and just do it.

Someone should forward a copy of the Boot & Saber article to every member of WEAC & to the Slim Jim Doyle regime. Sounds like real progress to me!
