MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Dane County Sheriff David Mahoney says his investigators are recommending a Janesville man be charged with killing a Mazomanie woman in February.
During a news conference Wednesday, Mahoney said the recommended charge against the 39-year-old man is first-degree intentional homicide with domestic abuse and weapon penalties. He says a criminal complaint likely will be filed Thursday. The man is expected to make an initial court appearance in Madison later in the day.
Deputies found 43-year-old Cheryl Gilberg dead in her home on the evening of Feb. 23. Mahoney says she had been shot.
The sheriff says the man is Gilberg's former boyfriend and was taken into custody on Feb. 24 in Rock County for failing to pay child support. He's been held in the Rock County jail ever since.
