Weekend closure of I-94 set to affect hospital traffic
MILWAUKEE - A big freeway closure is coming this weekend. It'll affect anyone headed to hospitals - be it ambulance drivers - or patients themselves.
Drivers will have to deal with a lot of construction on I-94 this weekend. It'll take planning and patience. For Bell Ambulance, it'll take that, plus extra preparation.
Ambulances are used to weaving in and out of traffic, with little time to spare. The I-94 construction project will cause a lot of delays, but James Lombardo says, not for EMTs.
“It's one of those things,” says EMT, James Lombardo. “We're professionals. This is what we do for a living. It's every day of the year, 24 hours a day. So we're going to be there for you and we're going to take care of the problem."
The crews inside save lives, but can save time, thanks to a map inside the ambulance. It shows what's open, and what alternate routes to take.
However, if you're the one driving, there is help out there. Anyone headed to Froedert, Children's Hospital, or the Medical College, can find out the best route to take by checking online, downloading the "Travel MRMC" app, or by calling 1-800-ZOO-0003
"We have so many people who come here who aren't familiar with the area,” says Sandra Peterson of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center. “Maybe it's their first time coming here, or they're coming here in an emergency situation. We want them to be able to get here and make it as stress-free as possible."
The mobile app is free, and can be used even after this weekend’s big closure.
