MILWAUKEE -- Wisconsin Democrats' bid to retake the state Senate will crystalize a bit after next week's primary determines their candidate for a key open seat.

Republicans have an 18-15 majority.

Four GOP incumbents are leaving, meaning opportunity for the Democrats.

The only one of those open seats in play during the Aug. 12 primary is in southwestern Wisconsin, where Dale Schultz is stepping down in a district seen as moderate.

Pat Bomhack and Ernie Wittwer are vying for the Democratic nomination. The winner will face Republican Howard Marklein in the Nov. 4 general election.
