Ugly sweater walk to fund emergency kits for Oak Creek classrooms
OAK CREEK -- The community of Oak Creek is trying to use a funny fundraiser to tackle a difficult topic in the community.
An ugly sweater walk will kick off at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Henry Miller Park Pavilion.
Organizer Carolyn Bukiewicz said the money raised will benefit a more serious cause. Oak Creek is trying to raise money to put kits in every school classroom that would help teachers respond to an active shooter situation.
"[The kits] could help whoever is in need at the time until the police and fire and paramedics get there," Bukiewicz said.
With echoes of the Sikh Temple shooting still in recent memory, she said a funny event is a way to make it OK for people to talk about the topic openly.
