UW-Whitewater one of 55 schools under investigation for sexual abuse response
WHITEWATER - The Education Department just released a list of 55 schools under investigation for how they handle sexual abuse complaints. UW - Whitewater was on the list because a complaint was filed against the school.
"I've never heard of anything like that happening on such a small campus," said sophomore Chalice Calabrese.
Students explain they generally feel safe on-campus but believe that sexual assaults happen more than they know.
"I think people might be afraid to talk about it. I think that's something we need to encourage, for people to come out and say 'hey, I've been sexually assaulted,' we need to prevent this," said freshman Ryan Lieck.
University officials sent a statement saying because of the complaint, they can't can't comment, but that "UW-Whitewater is concerned about the safety and well being of all its students, faculty and staff, and takes reports of sexual violence and harassment seriously."
Students say they're going to step up their own safety precautions.
"I carry around a small thing of mace just in case. I never thought I'd have to use it. That's just my mom being protective," Calabrese said.
Federal officials say just because a school is under investigation does not mean they have broken the law. No word on when we will know the outcome of the investigation.
