MILWAUKEE -- When a fire broke out at a north side Milwaukee home, the people inside did the only thing they could do to get out: Jump.

A grandmother and her young grandson jumped from the second floor to escape the flames before crews arrived at the home around 1:30 a.m. Friday near Palmer and Burleigh Streets.

"Upon arrival, we had heavy fire showing from the front of the building, from the first floor and the second floor, extending into the attic," Blackwood said.

Officials said a man inside the house yelled that there was a fire and was able to escape.

Blackwood said the grandmother broke her ankle and hurt her head, while her grandson hurt his arm in the fall.

"They jumped out of a second story window?” asked neighbor Blanca Reyes. “I don't know if I could do that. It depends I guess on the situation. Drastic measures drive you to drastic moves...I would be terrified."

Officials are now working to determine the cause of the fire.
