The gun was found while police were investigating a string of thefts in Sandburg Hall, the largest dorm on the UW-Milwaukee campus.
Campus police said the suspects entered students rooms to steal laptops and other electronics. They think the suspects may have hit 15 to 20 dorm rooms.
"It's very concerning," said student Haley Evanoff. "I have not heard about [the gun being found] at all, but that's alarming."
UWM Police Chief Michael Marzion said of the three people that were arrested Sunday, two are students and one lives in dorm where the stolen gun was found.
"It's kind of really scary," Evanoff said. "We left our door open this entire semester and now we have it locked."
UWM police sent out tweets after the incident saying three people had been arrested and reminded students the best way to protect yourself and your property is to lock your doors.
