Target stores in the crosshairs of credit card thieves
MILWAUKEE – Target shoppers are being asked to check their credit and debit card information for fraudulent purchases.
The Secret Service has confirmed that they are investigating a credit and debit card security breach at Target stores. A cyber security blog broke the news yesterday. According to their sources, it involves the theft of data stored on the magnetic strip on cards used at the stores.
Target estimates 40 million customers may have been affected between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15.
Target has issued the following statement:
“Target’s first priority is preserving the trust of our guests and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence. We regret any inconvenience this may cause,” said Gregg Steinhafel, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Target. “We take this matter very seriously and are working with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.”
