Suspect in infant kidnapping returns to Wisconsin for court date
MADISON - The hearing lasted less than 10 minutes, but it was the first chance Brianna Marshall and Bruce Powell got a chance to see the woman, the relative, who’s accused of stealing their baby.
While Marshall looked straight ahead during the hearing, Powell looked at Kristen Smith, leaning over the court bench.
The couple did not bring baby Kayden into court.
Kayden was taken from a town of Beloit home and was found outside an Iowa gas station 29 hours later.
Smith was brought back to Wisconsin from Iowa Friday to face federal kidnapping charges.
“She stays with us, in our custody until this case is resolved one way or another,” said U.S. Attorney John Vaudreuil.
Smith is in the process of hiring an attorney from Iowa to help her fight these charges. Warrants in the other states will wait until her case in Wisconsin has been finalized.
Smith could be back in court here as soon as next week to enter a plea.
