Summertime shows uptick in cases of contagious disease
The Milwaukee Health Department said a highly contagious seasonal disease is spreading throughout the Milwaukee area.
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease is a viral infection that primarily affects young children and spreads quickly in day cares, childcare centers, and kindergartens, especially in the summer.
Paul Biedrzycki of the Milwaukee Health Department said about 10-15 parents have reported cases of the disease throughout the last three or four weeks. He encouraged all parents to watch their children for symptoms, which usually last around a week.
"It starts with a fever that lasts a couple days before developing a rash on the soles of the feet and hands, including blisters around the mouth," Biedrzycki said.
The health department advises parents and childcare centers to disinfect surfaces, ensure children wash their hands, and keep them home if they show any signs of the disease.
