The state is asking people to volunteer for something dubbed the WEAVR, the Wisconsin Emergency Assistance Volunteer Registry.

State Health Officer Karen McCuen said it's a database of volunteer helpers.

McCuen said the need for volunteers covers medical pros like nurses, vets and EMT's, but also regular folks who'd be willing to do things like answer phone calls and distribute meals or water.

WEAVR members helped staff Red Cross shelters during flooding in 2008 and in 2005. Volunteers also helped screen and place Hurricane Katrina evacuees.
