Sheriff David Clarke defeats challenger Chris Moews in primary
MILWAUKEE -- It was a fight to the finish in the Democratic race for Milwaukee County Sheriff.
In the end, Sheriff David Clarke escaped with a victory over challenger Chris Moews.
Since there is no Republican in the race, Clarke will walk into a new term in November.
At midnight, there were still too many votes uncounted for the Sheriff to declare a decisive win.
"I still believe regardless of what happens in any election I'm in, I still want to be able to keep my head up high and say I ran a campaign the right way," Clarke said. "That's an integrity thing and a character thing."
The margin of victory was less than 5,000 votes and just four percentage points. A crushing defeat for Moews, who lost for a second straight time.
"This has been an amazing campaign and it seems like a lot of unprecedented things that happened with the outside support," Moews said. "I just want to thank you for your patience and support."
