Report: Wis. rarely revokes doctors' licenses
MADISON -- A new report shows that while the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board issued different penalties for the same offenses, doctors most often received the lightest punishment -- a reprimand.
The report issued Monday came partly in response to a newspaper investigation that found Wisconsin is among the worst states for doctor discipline with a heavy reliance on reprimands even in cases involving serious harm or death.
The board has a range of disciplinary options, including reprimands, suspensions or revocation of licenses.
Dr. Timothy Swan serves on the medical board's disciplinary guidelines committee, which requested the report. He says it will help the committee determine whether its actions are uniform and fair.
