RACINE -- A handful of students, parents and teachers from Mitchell Elementary and Mitchell Middle School in Racine gathered at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer Friday morning.

The church is just down the street from the school, where a fire broke out early Thursday, causing heavy damage to the campus' gymnasium area.

The Racine County School District provided free lunch and breakfast for students, even though the school day had been canceled.

For many, the gathering was a way to cope with what happened.

Occupational Therapist Anne Sadowski said she was worried about the students.

"I'm devastated," she said. "I've worked there for probably 18 years...I'm mostly worried about our kids though, how they are going to react. I work with kids with special needs, who don't handle adjustment well, so that's my biggest concern."

Kindergarten teacher Dawn Johnson thinks spending time together is crucial.

"It's making us all come together," she said. "The community will know we're here for them no matter what happens."

A meeting to update parents on the condition of the school and future plans will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Park High School.
