Police searching for Sheboygan purse snatcher
SHEBOYGAN -- Someone is attacking women as they leave drug stores in Sheboygan. The man knocks women down and steals their purses.
This Walgreens caught the suspect on camera.
The video's grainy, but you can clearly see a man running away with a woman's purse. Police believe he was after prescription pills the 48 year old woman just picked up at the Walgreens Pharmacy.
Another angle shows what happened moments earlier. The suspect approached her, and pushed her against the car before taking off. Donna Sergent often gets her medicine at the same Walgreens.
"You never had to worry about that in Sheboygan,” remarks Sergent. “This used to be a town where it was a good place to raise the kids."
There was a second purse-snatching two days later at Aurora Pharmacy.
"At this point, we're treating it as if it's the same person," says Lt. Kurt Brasser of the Sheboygan Police Department.
The second woman who was robbed was knocked to the ground when the suspect snatched her purse. She got a cut on her head and had to go to the hospital. The suspect's still on the loose, but there are ways women can stay safe.
Some of the tips? Hold your keys in a separate hand. That way, if your purse is snatched, the thief won’t be able to go to your house and easily let himself in. When you walk, have your purse close to your body, preferably strapped tight to your shoulder.
"Use the sidewalks that are busier, and the walking paths that are busier because there are more witnesses around,” adds Captain Steve Cobb.
Police tell TODAY’S TMJ4 both women did many things right - they parked in well-lit areas, and close to the pharmacy doors. In the meantime, they're working on several leads to find the purse-snatcher.
