MILWAUKEE - One person was shot in the head during an armed robbery.  Store customers ran for cover after hearing a gunshot.

The victim is a 44-year-old male who was shot once during the robbery and is being treated at a local hospital for life-threatening injuries.

“I pretty much thought I was going to get killed,” said Joan Wilbrandt.

She’s still shaking from her frightening ordeal inside the Family Dollar store on South 43rd Street and West Oklahoma Avenue.

Yellow crime tape and black and white police cars surrounded the building where she feared for her life.

“I can’t believe this is happening, it was pretty scary. I was shaking, it was pretty scary,” said Wilbrandt.

The shooting happened late Tuesday afternoon. Wilbrandt was hoping to get in and out of the store on a quick errand when panic set in.

“I heard a gunshot and some girls running toward me and we ran into the back and hid,” she said.

She didn’t see the gunman but called 9-1-1 while hiding. She couldn’t stop thinking about what might happen.

“I’m going to die. I’m going to get shot and I’m going to die.”

She’s thankful police arrived within minutes.  Mark Davis says he knows the person who was shot.

“Very pleasant man. He’d help you any way that he could,” said Davis.

Davis worries about the recent rise in violence.

“It seems like these places are getting hit left and right. If you are going to rob somebody, okay, do that, but why harm people."
