Police investigate shooting in Bay View neighborhood
MILWAUKEE - A woman is shot during a robbery on a quiet street in Bay View
"I heard a big bang, I heard some yelling," remembers Mickey Thrall.
It was a jarring start to Thrall's Sunday when just after 1:00 a.m., he heard a commotion right outside his window. It scared the veteran enough that he ran into another room for his own safety.
"I didn't look out the immediate window, I looked out the kitchen window because if somebody shot somebody and they're not caught, maybe if I'm going to be a witness, they'll come back and shoot me."
Police say a 29-year-old woman was shot after a robbery attempt. She was well enough to make it two blocks down the street before an ambulance picked her up. We're not releasing her name while police still investigate.
It's all a shock to Emma Nelson who just moved onto the block 6 months ago.
"Very surprised and very concerning," Nelson says. "We moved here thinking it was a very safe neighborhood. Hearing that is troubling."
But it is an area where people look out for each other. Emma came back from vacation to get the news from a neighbor.
"We got back into town and right away my neighbor came over and told me that this happened, giving us a warning to be on the lookout."
And until a suspect is caught, that's exactly what folks in this neighborhood plan to do.
"We're not happy to hear this. We want to keep this neighborhood as safe as possible. There's a lot of families around here too. We just want it to be safe."
The victim is still in the hospital, but is expected to recover. Nobody is in custody.
