Online petition asks stores to stay closed on Thanksgiving
GREENDALE - The push to move up Black Friday is starting to gain steam with more stores announcing they will be open on Thanksgiving Day.
Southridge in Greendale announced last week they will open on Thanksgiving Day at 8 p.m.
Simon owns Southridge and other shopping centers in Wisconsin, including one in Green Bay.
Amber Baumgart works at a store there and was so outraged the mall there will open on the holiday she started a petition on the website www.change.org.
"I didn't sign up for this, since when is 8 pm Thanksgiving Day okay?" said Baumgart.
She wants stores who are choosing to open on Thanksgiving Day to reverse their decision. So far more than 17,000 people have signed her petition.
There is a shorter shopping season this year because of when the holiday falls says Southridge General Manager Mary Mokwa.
"It's in demand to our customers reaction and response, they love to shop whenever we're open and the earlier the better." said Mary Mokwa.
Bayshore, Mayfair and Brookfield Square are all technically closed but some larger stores at those shopping centers will open at 8 p.m.
