MILWAUKEE -- One student suffered a gunshot injury to the hand after a series of robberies Friday morning near the Marquette University campus.

It happened around 2:30 Friday morning. According to a campus safety alert, the robberies all took place near 18th and Wisconsin Ave. A suspect approached two students, an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old, near the front of a parking structure at 18th and Wisconsin, displayed a handgun and demanded property.

The suspect and the 19-year-old student fought briefly, and the student was shot in the hand.

Meanwhile, a second suspect robbed a 19-year-old male of his wallet and cell phone and an 18-year-old male of his backpack in two other, separate instances.

Marquette campus Public Safety officers arrived in time to detain the shooter, who was then arrested by Milwaukee Police. The other suspect is still at large.

That suspect is described as a black male wearing a Chicago Blackhawks hat and a black jacket.

The student is being treated at a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

A second suspect was arrested Friday - police are currently questioning them in connection with the robberies.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Marquette's Department of Public Safety at 414-288-1911.
