One killed in Beloit traffic crash
BELOIT – One person was killed in a traffic crash in Beloit Sunday morning.
According to a police department release, a City of Beloit Police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a speeding violation near Fourth Street and Portland Avenue shortly after 2 am.
The suspect drove off instead at a high rate of speed. Officers did not follow the suspect since the speeding violation did not warrant a pursuit per department policy.
Police said the suspect failed to stop at a stop sign and hit another vehicle. After the initial collision, the suspect’s vehicle hit a utility pole. Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the vehicle.
A 22-year old Beloit man suspected of driving the vehicle died from his injuries. His passenger, a 22-year old woman from Beloit, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Two people in the other vehicle involved were not injured during the crash. Both vehicles were heavily damaged.
Police believe excessive speed may have been a factor in the crash.
The Wisconsin State Patrol Crash Reconstruction Team was requested to assist with the investigation. Beloit Police Evidence Technicians also assisted with the investigation.
