CHIPPEWA FALLS -- Retired Wisconsin U.S. Representative Dave Obey (D-7th District) warned about the dangers of gerrymandering Thursday night, at a public appearance at the Chippewa Falls Public Library.

"It certainly hurts the public interest," Obey said, according to the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram.

"Redistricting equals power. This is an abuse of power."

Obey cited examples the examples of Republicans changing district borders in Wisconsin to ensure their own re-election, as well as Democrats using the same tactic in Illinois. He said the redistricting system is inherently flawed, regardless of the party in power.

"It increases the political polarization in this country."

Obey, a Wausau resident, was the longest-tenured member of Congress in Wisconsin history. He served 21 consecutive terms, from 1969 until his retirement in 2011.
