RACINE -- There's no school again Friday for more than 1,000 students at Mitchell Elementary and Mitchell Middle School in Racine.

A fire broke out in the school Thursday morning, causing heavy damage to the campus' gymnasium area. Racine Fire Chief Steve Hansen said Thursday there was smoke and water damage in the basement, first and second floors of the school.

Students will not be allowed back inside the undamaged part of the building, at least until next week.

Breakfast and lunch are available for students Friday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 2417 Drexel Ave, in Racine.

A meeting to update parents on the condition of the school and future plans will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Park High School.
