New Berlin Police taking pro-active approach to help people prepare for deadly situations
NEW BERLIN - What if you found yourself in the middle of a deadly situation? A gunman opening fire on random targets? Could you protect yourself?
TODAY’S TMJ4 spoke with New Berlin police Friday where they're taking a pro-active approach to help. Police say they're doing that by sharing a YouTube video they believe might just save a life.
The video opens with three words, "Run, Hide, Fight." New Berlin police want those three words to stick in your head.
The video, put together by the City of Houston Mayor's Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security goes on to say, "If you are ever to find yourself the middle of an active shooter event, your survival may depend on whether or not you have a plan."
New Berlin Police Captain Mike Glider said the department is just trying to be pro-active.
"I don't think that there's anybody that we talk to that doesn't think [a shooting] can't happen here, because it has happened so close," said Cpt. Glider.
At a New Berlin barber shop, we found Shannon West and her client Dennis Mangan. They fell into that category.
"Even if it's not happening right now, doesn't mean that it can't," said West.
West and Mangan were eager to watch the video.
"I don't even wanna be in that situation, let's put it that way but yea, you gotta defend yourself, it's either that or you're gonna die," said Mangan.
It's the smaller businesses that may not have a lot of training that police and the New Berlin Chamber of Commerce hope will check out the video.
Cpt. Glider makes just one point about the video. In the "run" section, Cpt. Glider says once you're out of the building, you shouldn't stay near it, as the actors did in this video. You should get far away from the place.
