GLENDALE -- A gas leak prompted evacuations on the North Shore Wednesday morning.

A three to four inch natural gas line was hit around 9 a.m. by a contractor near Bender and Green Bay Roads in Glendale, according to We Energies.

North Shore Fire Chief Rob Whitaker said about 50 homes and businesses were evacuated as a precaution, but only 10 were occupied at this time of the day.

Whitaker said fire crews will go house-to-house to check on gas levels in homes.
