SUAMICO, Wis. (AP) -- The NEW Zoo in Suamico is one of many across the country that's breeding red wolves in an effort to rebuild the endangered species in the wild.

Green Bay Press-Gazette Media reports that two months ago, a red wolf named Mayo gave birth to healthy pups at the zoo. On Friday, the six pups poked their heads out of their shelter to peek at a zoo worker.

Animals curator Carmen Murach says the pups are like young domestic dogs at this point in their lives, and they are spending more time awake and wrestling.

Murach says it's not known if the pups will go into the wild, or whether they'll be relocated to other zoos as mature adults in a couple years.
