MILWAUKEE -- The city of Milwaukee is hosting its first Motorcycle Safety Awareness week, which runs from May 3 to May 10.

Last June, Vinencia Dawson was killed in a motorcycle crash. Shortly after, her family petitioned the Milwaukee Common Council for a day of awareness. Instead, they got a whole week.

Crashes involving motorcycles have been on the rise in recent years, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said he wants everyone out on the roads to work together to stay safe.

"Everywhere you go, people in cars are preoccupied with their phones. We usually call it distracted driving. I call it stupid driving," Clarke said. "Every time i see a driver with a phone in one hand, and the other on the steering wheel, i say to myself 'there goes a dumb person using a smartphone.'"
