SHAWANO - More than 50 animals have been found dead at home in Shawano.
A contractor doing work at a house on the 800 block of East Maurer Street went to police with the disturbing discovery. The Shawano Humane Society is now caring for the few animals rescued alive.
The dead animals include birds, lizards, snakes, and ferrets. Fifteen animals right now are alive. Five chinchilla's, two dogs, several birds kept at the shelter. A 12-foot python and two lizards also found.
"It is a great loss. At least we saved these ones. These chinchillas, these birds, the snake, these lizards," says Shelly Hansen with the Shawano County Humane Society.
The snake and two lizards were taken to an aquatic refuge in Ashwaubenon. The Humane Society says they will take care of the animals until they find a new home for them.
