MILWAUKEE -- An undercover investigation by the IRS revealed that a tax preparation service filed thousands of bogus claims, giving out over $1 million in fraudulent refunds.
The Journal Sentinel says that Sunday Uwubiti and others at Trustee Tax Service aided taxpayers is drafting false claims of self-employment, as well as falsifying some returns to maximize refunds.
Uwubiti was charged with two counts of aiding and abetting the false returns on Friday. Prosecutors filed a plea agreement the same day according to court records. He could face up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.
The investigation began in 2011, and about 79 people interviewed said that Uwubiti and his associates would charge up to $300 for the service.
