Milwaukee street renamed to honor fallen solider
MILWAUKEE – A section of Richards Street on Milwaukee's north side has been renamed after Army Specialist Michelle Witmer - the first female Wisconsin National Guard soldier to be killed in combat.
Witmer was killed in April 2004 during an attack by small-arms fire and an improvised explosive device in Baghdad.
“It is an honor to recognize and remember Specialist Witmer for her service and sacrifice,” Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele said in a release.
The section of road that has been renamed - from Capitol Drive to the north - includes the Richards Street Armory, home station of the 32nd Military Police Company, where Witmer was a member.
