Milwaukee police help vacate smoke-filled apartment complex

MILWAUKEE -- A fire destroyed several units in a Milwaukee apartment complex at 70th and Silver Spring Drive Tuesday.

Milwaukee police from a nearby station were able to comb through the building make sure the units were vacant. Police said one person was transported to the hospital with a medical condition, but it may not be related to the fire.

"The building was just filling up with smoke, so we began going up the stairs knocking on different apartments," MPD officer Kenneth Daugherty said. "We couldn't get an anwser so we started kicking in doors just trying to make sure all the citizens got out." 

Responding fire units were able to finish the search of the apartment building and extinguish the fire.
