Milwaukee church group plans missionary trip to Kenya
MILWAUKEE - A Milwaukee church group is keeping a close eye on developments in Kenya as they plan for a missionary trip to the region.
Hundreds are dead and countless others are feared buried in the rubble at the Westgate shopping center in Kenya. A region in turmoil, and the place Bishop Nathaniel Stampley says he needs to be.
"We cannot let evil triumph over good," Stampley explains.
Bishop Stampley is with Least of These International Ministries out of Milwaukee. His missionary group is planning to go to Kenya in just three weeks with school and medical supplies.
"We're watching and seeing what the news says," Stampley explains. "But it doesn't stop us unless the U.S. government says it's not safe to travel."
Bishop Stampley is no stranger to the region. He's traveled to Kenya 10 times before, including right after the embassy bombings in 1998. This latest incident, a reminder that safety is something to think about.
"We are very cognizant. We do a security advance to make sure that the group we're taking is in a safe environment," he explains.
But the Bishop says scenes like what happened at the mall are why his work must go on.
