Milwaukee Satanist raises money for Lucifer statue
MILWAUKEE - Lucifer, The Prince of Darkness, is an image that many Satanists revere. The Satanic Temple now wants to build a seven foot monument of Satan.
"We know damn well it is probably going to get demolished [vandalized] so we wanted to have something that was a little more interactive," said Brian Warner, a Satanic High Priest of the sect, "so that is why we choose the throne, a place for people to sit on. It is a conversation piece."
Warner, living in Milwaukee, says the reason for the statue is simple.
"The right-wing religious majority believes they have the right to impose their beliefs on everybody - the fact of the matter is this is not a Christian country, this is a multicultural country that prides itself on plurality."
The group wants to erect the statue at the State Capitol building in Oklahoma City - right next to a monument of the Ten Commandments.
Warner says raising the $20,000 needed has not been an issue.
"We had someone gives us $1,000, now I guess we have to give them a t-shirt, a mug, and some bumper stickers. "
But there's division within in the Satanic movement. A post on The Church of Satan website denounced the monument, saying it would make a mockery of Satanism. But that's not stopping the group from forging ahead, even though their plan may be challenged in court.
"It could even get pushed to the Supreme Court which I would love to see happen, freedom of religion - it does not say as long as it's Christian."
