MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Common Council elected a new president Tuesday.

Michael Murphy received unanimous support for the position that was recently vacated by Willie Hines, who took another job with the city.

"Milwaukee is a great city, however like any great city we have challenges that poverty brings," Murphy said. "In spite of these challenges, I know working together we can make a positive difference in the lives of our citizens."

Murphy is the longest serving Alderman on the Common Council. He has been elected by voters in the 10th district seven times.
