Mayor Barrett reveals more about his collapse, heart ailment
"When they were taking me out to the ambulance, I did think I can't believe what I'm seeing. As some of you know, I had an incident 5 years ago. I thought oh my gosh, it's another West Allis ambulance and I'm leaving the state fair park area," joked Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.
Barrett was in a good mood Friday, making fun about his trip to the hospital on Sunday. The Mayor planned to run 60 minutes on his 60th birthday, but the Pettit Ice Center was closed for a race.
"They said, there's a 20 kilometer run, and you can be part of that. My response was, I've never run 20 kilometers in my life."
He not only ran, but finished the 20k. They even played "Born to Run," by Bruce Springsteen for his last lap.
"I thought, I'm getting a little weak, and that's when I ended up in the hospital."
They found a blockage in his heart, and performed an angioplasty. Barrett adds an EKG showed there was no damage to his heart.
"My wife was not very pleased that I'm off shoveling for the next 6 weeks."
The Mayor jokes it's been a learning experience.
"I found out I am not 25 years old anymore."
